The newly hatched caterpillars start feeding almost immediately. They are tiny at first (a quarter of an inch and a light tan color) and the feeding damage at this stage is mostly cosmetic. As they grow over the next seven to ten days they become the destructive stage. A late instar armyworm is about an inch and a half long, brown to greenish, with stripes along the body and an inverted Y mark on the head capsule. By the time they reach full size they are eating constantly and can consume more grass per worm than a homeowner would ever guess.
Armyworms hit Bermuda hard. They also feed on St. Augustine, Zoysia, and most other turf, but Bermuda lawns are usually the first to show outbreak-level damage because the canopy is shorter and the worms can move across more turf per night. Armyworm feeding leaves the tips frayed and chewed in irregular patterns. You almost have to bend down and look closely to see it. It is not the kind of damage you notice from the back porch.
The second sign is small zones of grass that look brown or thinned even though the irrigation hit them last night. The thinning is usually irregular in shape, often a few feet across, and it shows up first along the edges of the lawn or in places that get morning sun. The grass blades in the thinned area are short and ragged. The thatch shows through.
The third sign is birds. Cattle egrets, mockingbirds, grackles, and other ground-feeding birds will work an armyworm-infested lawn aggressively. If you see a lot of birds standing on your lawn for hours at a time when they did not used to, look closely at where they are working. They are eating the worms. If you let the birds do that work for two days you might come out ahead. If the outbreak is larger than the birds can keep up with, the lawn will be gone before they finish.
The fourth sign, and the one that confirms an active outbreak, is finding the worms themselves. Pull the canopy apart with your hand and look down at the thatch and soil surface in a thinning area. Armyworms feed at night and rest during the heat of the day under whatever cover they can find. You will see them curled up under loose thatch, against the soil surface, or sometimes climbing on the lower stems of the grass.
The Soap Flush Test
The most reliable diagnostic for armyworms takes five minutes. Mix two tablespoons of dish soap into a gallon of water. Pour the solution slowly over a square foot at the edge of a suspicious area, or over any patch where you have seen thinning, ragged blade tips, or unusual bird activity. Wait two to five minutes.
If armyworms are present, the soap irritates them and they crawl to the surface. You will see them on the grass blades or on the wet soil within the test square. Counts of three or more worms per square foot mean treatment is warranted. Counts of ten or more per square foot mean treat today, not tomorrow.
Test multiple spots. Armyworms cluster as a population moves across a lawn. One square might show nothing while another square ten feet away is loaded. Walk the lawn in a grid pattern and run the test in the marginal zones.

Chinch bug damage shows up first in the sunniest hottest parts of the lawn (next to driveways, sidewalks, the south side of the house). The grass at the damage edge stays wilted even after watering. Armyworm damage shows up in irregular shapes, often in shaded portions too, and the grass blades are physically chewed rather than wilted.
Drought stress causes the lawn to look blue-gray before it browns and the footprints stay visible when you walk across stressed turf in the afternoon. Armyworm damage skips the blue-gray phase. The blades go from green to chewed to absent.
Heat dormancy in Bermuda is uniform across the lawn and the grass is still anchored at the crowns. Armyworm damage is patchy and irregular and you can see the chew marks under a hand lens.
Prevention and Monitoring
