What Year-Round Lawn Care Costs in San Antonio

If you are collecting quotes and finding they do not line up, the usual explanation is not that someone is overcharging. It is that mowing and lawn treatment are two different services, they are often quoted together without being separated, and companies bundle seasonal work differently.

We would rather you understand how the number is built than simply take ours on trust. Here is how it works in this market.

Mowing, Priced by the Visit

Routine maintenance on a typical San Antonio residential lot generally runs $40 to $70 per visit. That normally covers mowing, string trimming, edging the walks and drive, and blowing off the hard surfaces.

Frequency matters as much as the per visit price when you are working out annual cost. Through our long growing season, weekly service is standard from roughly spring into early fall. As growth slows, every other week becomes reasonable, and in the depth of winter dormant Bermuda may need very little.

Be careful comparing a weekly price against a biweekly one. Biweekly looks cheaper per year and often produces a worse result, because you end up removing more than a third of the blade at each cut, which stresses the grass. That is the reason many companies will not offer biweekly during peak growth.

Larger lots on the edges of Bexar County, quarter acre and above, run well above the typical range simply because there is more to cut.

The Treatment Program Is Separate

Fertilization and weed control is a different service with a different cost structure, priced on measured turf area rather than per visit.

A full year program on a typical lot generally runs $400 to $800, spread across six to eight applications. Our long season means more applications than a northern market needs, which is why comparing a San Antonio program against a national average is misleading.

Add ons price separately. Grub control commonly adds $60 to $120 for the season. Disease control for the fungal problems St. Augustine is prone to here varies with pressure. Fire ant treatment is its own item and worth carrying on most properties in this area.

Some companies fold all of this into a single monthly figure and some itemize. Neither is wrong, but a bundled number always looks larger than an unbundled one for identical work, so ask for the line items when comparing.

What Actually Moves the Price

Square footage is the foundation, and it is measured turf, not lot size. A quarter acre lot with a large house, a wide driveway, a pool, and substantial beds may have half the grass of a similar sized lot with an open yard.

After that, it is edge work. A rectangular open yard cuts quickly. A yard with many beds, trees, a pool surround, a play set, and tight corners takes far longer per square foot, because the time goes into trimming and maneuvering rather than mowing.

Gate access is the one homeowners never think to mention and it changes the number regularly. If a standard mower does not fit through the gate, the crew uses a smaller machine or a push mower for the back yard, and that can double the time. Measure your gate before you request a quote and mention it.

Slope, drainage, dogs in the yard, and how much debris comes off surrounding trees all factor in as well.

Where San Antonio Differs

A few local realities shape the cost here in ways they do not elsewhere.

Our growing season is long, so there are more mowing visits per year than in most of the country. That raises the annual mowing figure while the per visit price looks ordinary.

Water rules matter. San Antonio has year round watering restrictions that tighten in dry periods, and a lawn kept on the legal minimum needs different care than one watered freely. It also means a company promising a lush lawn regardless of conditions is not being straight with you.

And a lot of our soil is thin over caliche, which affects fertility, watering, and what any program can realistically achieve. A quote that does not account for your actual soil is a quote for a generic lawn.

What a Cheap Quote Usually Means

There is a floor below which the work cannot be done properly, and it is worth knowing what gets cut to get under it.

Usually it is time on site: no edging, no trimming around beds, no blowing off the driveway. Sometimes it is equipment maintenance, and a dull blade tears grass rather than cutting it, which browns the tips and opens the plant to disease. On the treatment side it is often product rate, or fewer applications across the year.

It can also mean no insurance. Ask. A crew operating equipment on your property without liability coverage is a risk you are absorbing without being told.

None of that means the cheapest quote is always wrong. It means you should know what you are buying, and get it in writing.

What Gets Billed Seasonally

Beyond mowing and the treatment program, a handful of items appear once or twice a year, and they are the ones that surprise people on an invoice if nobody mentioned them in advance.

Leaf cleanup arrives in late autumn and is generally priced by the visit or by volume, depending on how much tree cover the property has. A yard with several mature live oaks generates a genuinely large amount of material, and live oaks in this area drop heavily in late winter rather than in fall, which catches newcomers out.

Bed maintenance, meaning weeding, edging, and refreshing mulch, is usually seasonal rather than included in a mowing price. Mulch is a material cost on top of the labor.

Shrub trimming is typically quoted separately and once or twice a year is normal for most properties here.

Aeration and topdressing, where a lawn needs them, are distinct pieces of work with their own equipment and are priced accordingly.

None of these are hidden charges when they are discussed up front. Ask which of them your quote includes, because that is frequently where two similar looking numbers diverge.

Questions Worth Asking

Is mowing priced per visit or monthly, and how many visits does a monthly figure assume during peak season and during winter? Does the price include edging, trimming, and blowing off hard surfaces? Is the treatment program priced on measured turf, and can you show me the measurement? How many applications, and what goes down in each? Are grub, disease, and fire ant control included or extra? Are you insured? What happens if a treatment does not take, and does a return visit cost extra?

Specific answers indicate someone who looked at your property. Vague answers indicate a guess that will be revised later.

Measure your gate, walk your yard and note how much of it is actually grass, and decide whether you want mowing, the treatment program, or both. Those three pieces of information will get you comparable quotes instead of confusing ones.
