Why Is My San Antonio Lawn Yellow? 6 Causes Beyond Just Watering

Short Answer: Yellow lawns in San Antonio almost always trace to one of six causes: iron deficiency from alkaline soil, take-all root rot starting to spread, nitrogen deficiency that the current fertilization is not addressing, chinch bug damage in early stages, soil compaction limiting root function, or fungal disease pressure. Watering more is rarely the answer and often makes things worse. Here is how to read what your lawn is telling you and what to do about each cause.

If your San Antonio lawn looks yellow rather than the deep green you expect, you have probably already tried watering more. For some yellowing problems that helps. For most, it does not. Yellow grass is a symptom, not a diagnosis, and figuring out the actual cause is the difference between fixing the problem and watching it spread.

Across San Antonio, Alamo Heights, and the surrounding area, here are the six causes we see most often when homeowners call about yellow lawns.

Cause 1: Iron Deficiency

San Antonio soils are largely alkaline, with pH levels often in the 7.5 to 8.5 range. At those pH levels, iron and several other micronutrients become locked up in the soil and unavailable to grass even when present.

The visual signature of iron deficiency is yellowing of newer leaves while older leaves stay green, often with green veins still visible against yellow leaf tissue. The pattern is called interveinal chlorosis. It shows up across the whole lawn or in larger zones rather than as discrete patches.

Treatment is a chelated iron application, which usually greens the lawn within 5 to 7 days. Long term, the underlying soil pH issue can be addressed gradually with sulfur applications and improved organic matter, though pH change is slow and requires patience.

Cause 2: Take-All Root Rot

Take-all root rot is one of the most common diseases on San Antonio St. Augustine and Bermuda lawns. The grass yellows first, then thins, then browns out in irregular patches that gradually expand.

The disease attacks the roots from below, so by the time you see yellowing on top, significant root damage has already occurred. The grass blades pull up easily because the root system is being destroyed.

Take-all thrives in compacted, alkaline soils with poor drainage, conditions that fit a lot of San Antonio yards. Treatment requires a fungicide program timed to specific soil temperatures, plus addressing the underlying soil chemistry. Watering more makes it worse.

Cause 3: Nitrogen Deficiency

Lawns need consistent nitrogen to maintain their green color and density. If fertilization is too light, too infrequent, or being washed away by heavy watering, nitrogen deficiency develops. The pattern is uniform pale-yellow color across the lawn rather than discrete patches.

Many San Antonio homeowners on minimal fertilization programs (or no program at all) experience this in spring as the lawn comes out of dormancy hungry. The fix is straightforward: a properly-rated fertilizer application produces visible greening within 7 to 14 days.

If you are on a program and still seeing nitrogen deficiency, the program rates may be too low or you may be losing nitrogen to volatilization (heat) or leaching (excessive watering).

Cause 4: Chinch Bug Damage in Early Stages

Chinch bugs feed on St. Augustine grass blades and inject a toxin that yellows and eventually kills the grass. Early infestation produces yellow patches in the hottest, sunniest part of the lawn before the patches turn brown and die.

If you have yellow areas that are spreading outward from a hot spot, especially in May or June, chinch bug damage is a real possibility. Confirmation involves parting the grass blades at the active edge and looking for tiny black-and-white insects running along the soil surface.

Treatment is a targeted insecticide application. Watering more does not help. The bugs need to be killed and the damage needs to be replaced or allowed to fill in.

Cause 5: Soil Compaction

Compacted soil restricts root function. Roots cannot reach water and nutrients efficiently, oxygen levels drop, and the grass shows stress. Yellowing from compaction often appears in high-traffic areas first: paths, where you park, around play equipment.

The diagnostic is a screwdriver test. Push a screwdriver or pencil into the affected soil. If you cannot get past 2 inches, the soil is compacted. Healthy soil should accept a probe to about 6 inches with moderate pressure.

Treatment is core aeration. The holes that aeration creates relieve compaction and let water, oxygen, and roots return to normal function. Most compacted lawns show meaningful improvement within 4 to 6 weeks of aeration.

Cause 6: Fungal Disease Pressure

Beyond take-all, several other fungal diseases can produce yellowing. Brown patch, dollar spot, and gray leaf spot all show various forms of yellowing in their early stages before progressing to brown patches.

The diagnostic clues are shape (circular vs irregular), edge appearance (rings vs gradual fade), and timing (warm humid nights favor most of these diseases). A close look at individual blades can also reveal lesions or discoloration patterns specific to each disease.

Treatment is a targeted fungicide chosen based on the specific disease, plus watering and mowing adjustments to reduce conditions that favor disease.

How to Diagnose Yours

Start with the pattern. Uniform yellowing across the lawn suggests fertility, iron, or pH issues. Patchy yellowing suggests disease, pest, or compaction. Yellowing that spreads from a hot spot suggests chinch bugs.

Then look at individual blades. Interveinal yellowing (green veins, yellow tissue) is iron. Yellowing of newer leaves with older leaves green is iron or nitrogen. Yellowing of all leaves uniformly suggests broader fertility issues.

Check the soil moisture. If the lawn is yellow and the soil is wet, watering more is not the answer. If the soil is dry, drought stress may be a contributing factor.

Look for pest activity. Chinch bugs and others can be seen with careful observation.

What Watering More Will Not Fix

Iron deficiency, take-all root rot, chinch bug damage, fungal disease, and soil compaction all get worse with more water. Drought stress is the only common cause of lawn yellowing where more water actually helps, and even then proper watering technique (deep and infrequent in early morning) matters more than total volume.
